ARE YOU READY FOR SOME MORE HISTORY? WELL HERE IT IS.
Our Club has faithfully contributed a small but on inconsequential sum annually toward the purchase of new books and part-time librarian. Today , we have of 2,000 volumes on our shelves and can accept no more books for the present, due to lack of space.
Had our group contributed nothing more than the Library to our town it would have more than justified its existence, for
"When, some precious parchment you unroll, You have All Paradise in your own soul"
Faust, by Wagner
Our Club from the very beginning has been faced with lack of funds, and even today, we operate on a very small treasury.
But we were never deterred from responding generously ( all though not spectacularly) to the many varied demands made upon us, both locally and thru the Federation.
How did we accomplish this? Through sheer hard work by putting on or sponsoring innumerable functions, such as: Ice Cream Festivals, Strawberry Festivals, Chicken Suppers, Jitney Suppers, Food Sales, Teas, Serving Lunches at Sales, Minstrel Shows, Musicales, Plays,Stunts, Benefit Card parties, Selling of magazines, waste paper, Rummage Sales, Management of Department Stores for a day, with certain percentage on all sales obtained. In this effort we also brought home a silver trophy. Many free-will offerings, a few, out and out, door to door soliciting campaigns for exceptional projects.
All these activities not only provided a lot of fun, but together with our dollar a year dues, furnished us our only source of revenue. From this revenue we have been able to meet the request of our very active Committees, and to lay aside each year a fairly substantial, the wholly inadequate sum toward a Building Fund, with which we hope to erect our own Club House very soon, and to house our Library within.
You may appreciate a brief insight into how our small revenue is spent. Like all good housekeepers, we have a systematic, itemized annual Budget, fore our regular, necessary expense including such items as: Annual Federation Dues. Annual Convention Expenses for President and Secretary, Regular Supplies for Officers and certain Committee activites, such as -Librarian salary, fuel, purchase of new books, Subscriptions to Club Magazine and Book Lovers Club: preparation of Year Books and Programs, Press notices, Annual Clean-up Days, Regular Charitable Donations,to Poor Farm, Veteran Hospital etc.
Besides our regular expense, we have donated to so many worthy miscellaneous affairs. that it would be impossible to name them all. However, I have listed at random, a few of the items, just to give you an inkling of how diversified are our philanthropic endeavors. and here I would like to again stress the fact, that although our contributions could not obviously be spectacularly magnanimous, they have been given with wholehearted, enthusiastic, sympathetic understanding of the beneficiaries' needs.
Here are a few of our miscellaneous donations: Student Loan Fund (GFWC), International Scholarship Fund , Penny Art Fund, Provided a Rest Room at the old County Fair, for Public, Essential Sanitary Equipment to Poor Farm and Jail; furnished Lunches at School Clinics, (Trachoma), Donation to Shepherdsville School Rallies, May Day Festival for Blue-Ribbon Children, Trophy for Basket Ball Tournament, See-saws for colored Playground, Soft Ball Field, Community Recreation Program; Community Christmas Tree Baskets and Decorations, Prizes for Outdoor Christmas decorations, Hazelwood TB Sanatorium (Jefferson Co), Clothing and money to Bullitt Co T B patients, Bed,pillows and chair to TB Hut, School Dental Clinic, Crippled Children's Hospital Drive, Cancer Drive, Infantile Paralysis Drive, Morehead Flood Suffers, Redecoration of Library, Sending of flowers to Sick and the Dead, School Supplies to children of Europe, Yard goods to Greek Children, Speakers and Films for Special Educational Programs.
All though we are not exactly proud of the amounts of our monetary contributions- we certainly owe no apologies for them, since we give practically all that we have as fast as we make it. We only wish we had more to bestow on the many worthy projects we are called upon to support.
However, we are rightfully proud of other contributions we have made to our local Community, State and Nation. Contributions of such value that no monetary considerations can be placed upon the, Contributions that were coined from on the best characteristics of our Club's fine womanhood combining their keen intellects, their political acumen, their ready tongues, sharp wit, gentle
hearts, but above all, their quiet but steel like determination.
these outstanding contributions have been made mainly thru the work of well-organized, very active, capable committees, and their gifted leaders.

Spotlight on our Membership Chair Darlene Mann
Membership Chair Darlene Mann
We have a lot of wonderful women in our club that give tirelessly to help those in our community. Today I would like to introduce one of those women to you.
Her name is Darlene Mann. She has been a Bullitt County Women's Club member for 22 years. In those 22 years she has been a very active member of the club. She has served as president (1997) First vice president (1996) She has been Membership chair from 1998-2010 and is currently the chair of the the membership committee. She has also served on the district level as District Conservation Chair. She chairs the Bake Sale Committee something that has been near and dear to her. She began as chair in 1996 and still continues to serve as Bake Sale Chair today. She has also served on the Fine Arts, Style Show and Jr. Miss Committee.
She was invited to attend a Salad Supper in 1992 that was hosted at the home of Betty Porter. Darlene's twins had just turned 2 and she knew it would be a wonderful opportunity to get out and mingle with other women in the community. She was so impressed by the different facets of the club and how they were so involved in in the Scholarship Programs. It wasn't until the year of the 75th anniversary of the club that I really realized the far reaching impact of the club. I took on a project and re-typed a manuscript from 1948 spotlighting the first 25 years of the club. I was awe struck at what this small club had achieved in 25 years! I am so honored to be a part of the Bullitt County Women's Club.
Darlene is an active member of the Mt. Washington community, she sits on the Main Street Board and she is very active in her church, First Baptist Church of Mt. Washington. She works full time out side the home and at this time her work dictates how much time she has to spend on projects in the community.
Darlene married her high school sweet-heart in 1978 and has been married for 36 years. Her husband Mike is a life long resident of Mt. Washington, after they were married she moved to Mt. Washington where they built a wonderful life together. They have 3 children, Laura who is 26, and Michael and Maddie that are 24. Laura and Maddie still live and work in Mt. Washington and Michael just took a position in New York working for Tommy Hilfiger.
Darlene loves reading, traveling and cooking and baking and has an amazing garden her and her husband enjoy working in. She still plans on being the Chair of the Bake sale Committee and also is interested in finding out more about the By-Laws Committee.
She is on facebook be sure to check and make sure you have her added on your facebook page. The pictures of her garden she shares on facebook are so beautiful they really have a beautiful garden.
Here are just a few of the pictures from darlene's garden this year.

History of BCWC continued Page 2
History continued:
As promised here are more facts to read.
New members were rapidly added by invitation only and all though we permitted a few women living in the county to become honorary members we did not include them as regular members until July 1927 when we changed our name to "The Woman's Club of Bullitt County". It was not until October 1934 that we adopted the present name "The Bullitt County Woman's Club".
During our infancy, the members worked harmoniously and enthusiastically and seriously together and showed not only versatility and ability, but marked leadership and splendid judgement in their types of program and activities. The Club of today owes them much for the solid foundation upon which it now rests.
We had differences of opinion among ourselves and external adversities and some criticism but not once did we waiver in our determination to carry our purpose of our organization, which is "To Promote philanthropy and civic and intellectual improvement".
No other civic organization in our community can claim an unbroken quarter of a century of service nor point with pride to many achievements of so versatile a nature as "The Bullitt County Woman's Club".
It was steadfastly stood as a good influence in our community, working indefatigably and so quietly with the forces of decency and progress, that many less informed citizens, while enjoying the fruits of our labors, are wholly unaware and unappreciative of our endeavors.
This is a most opportune time for a brief review of our activities and attainments and for a challenge to other groups in our community to match our pioneer record.
Less than three months after its first meeting on January 14, 1924 our Club accomplished on of its first and most far-reaching objectives, with opening of a Library to the Public.
A gift by Mr. W.H. Troll of approximately 500 books formed the nucleus around which we built. Quite a few volumes were contributed by our own members and friends until the Library grew tro be a real credit to our little Club.
Our local Catholic Church kindly offered us a room in which to house our books and we are deeply appreciative of its hearty cooperation thru out these twenty-five years.
In those early days, we were unable to employ a librarian, so the members themselves took turns at serving in that capacity. I remember only too well the many hours spent by Mrs. Ella Chappell, Mrs. Charles Troll, Mrs. Malcom Harmon and I, in cataloging , cross filing and indexing these first volumes. Our system may not have been a scientific , but it operated successfully for many years. It was not until 1943, that a librarian was called in to properly classify our rapidly expanding library.

feeling the need of closer personal contact, and a common urge for broader community service, and individual cultural growth, were invited to meet at the home of Mrs. O.P. Means, for the purpose of organizing a Woman's Club.
A few of the original members preferred a strictly Literary Club but fortunately, after a rather lively but friendly discussion, a far-sighted majority favored a club of much broader interests.
Mrs. O.P. Means was named our President Protem and Mrs. Ada Troutman, our Secretary Protem. A legislative committee, consisting of Miss Ivy Troll, chairman, Mrs. Addie T. Harmon and Mrs. Ella Chappell was named to draw up the First Constitution and By-Laws. These were presented and approved at our next meeting, which was held two weeks later at the home of Mrs. Charles Bridwell. At this second meeting, we elected Mrs. Means as our first President, Mrs. Troutman as our Secretary-Treasurer combined and Mrs. Ella Chappell as our first Vice-President.
We agreed upon the paltry sum of twenty-five cents a month for dues, (these were very shortly increased, however) and we were to meet every two weeks at the home of whichever member volunteered to take us.
And so, the Woman's Club of Shepherdsville was born.

SPOTLIGHT ON "CASA" WHO THEY ARE AND WHAT THEY DO
CASA stands for Court Appointed Special Advocates. CASA's focus is to help and advocate on-behalf of the abused and neglected children that are in the court system. Their goal is to seek safe, permanent families for the children in the court system as quickly as possible.
CASA is a private non-profit organization. They recruit, train, and support court approved community volunteers to advocate for the children in the court system. All of the CASA volunteers are appointed by judges. CASA volunteers usually handle just one case at a time, and they commit to staying on that case until the child is placed in a safe, permanent home.
Let me introduce you to the staff of the CASA of Bullitt County.
Cindy Prestigiacomo featured to the left is the Executive Director of CASA
Pictured to the right of Cindy is Dana Elkins She is the volunteer Coordinator. She assists in volunteer recruitment, training and supervision of the volunteers.

Salad Supper 2014
Welcome to the Bullitt County Woman's Club Salad Supper. The Salad Supper is the main membership drive of the year. All the ladies bring their favorite salads and share with the group. That is Melanie Roberts (part of Hostess Committee) welcoming the ladies as the enter the house.
We would like to thank Barbara Plenge for inviting us into her home.
She told us a little history about the home and this is where she started her life with her new husband 40+ years ago.
A big thank you to the Membership and the Hostess Committees for putting it all together. There were over 40 seats for members and guests set up on the outside area and I did not see any empty seats.
Thanks for anyone who had a part in this beautiful evening. If you did not join that night I hope it gives you an idea of what a wonderful group this is.
Look at all the wonderful salads spread out on the island. That is Linda Rayhill and Pam Billings of the Hostess committee that is getting it ready for all of us.

MEMBERSHIP COMMITTE SPOTLIGHT
Hello to all. Today I would like to take a few minutes and tell you all about the Membership Standing Committee, who the ladies are that work very hard to make sure the Membership information you receive is timely and up to date. These ladies work long hours on keeping all the membership records up to date, they not only keep the membership records updated but the also are responsible for keeping all of our name badges neatly in each envelope and ready for us at every meeting. They also keep the attendance for our club, and review the membership requirements updating them as necessary.
The Membership Standing Committee is also the committee responsible for our salad supper in September. The salad supper is our annual meeting where we invite potential new members to come and enjoy a salad supper with us and get to know the ladies that make up our club.
For this year there are eight members that are serving on this committee. Darlene Mann is the chairwoman and the members are Mary Lou Mason, Cindy Mason, Karen Robey, Sara Sulier, Martha Knox, Linda Rayhill and Jean Qualls.
Here are a few of the pictures from our salad super last Monday.
